The common causes of lung conditions & what to do about it
According to approximately 40,000 deaths each year in the UK are caused by air pollution. Worldwide of course is even bigger issue and according to experts it will be the cause of more deaths and poor sanitation and a lack of drinking water. Air pollution in the UK however is certain a cause of major respiratory issues. It’s a major recent issue : nitrogen dioxide (NO2) a gas linked with lung problems, caused mainly by burning fossil fuels is one of the main pollutants of concern , with the uk government facing a legal challenge over it’s failure to meet EU targets. According to the royal college of physicians and royal college of paediatrics and child health , who co-authored the report , state that air pollution is linked to cancer, asthma, diabetes, obesity, dementia, stroke, and heart disease -studies show that 40,000 deaths were directly or indirectly due to their air pollution. Some experts estimated that this would affect UK life expectancy more than eliminating road accidents or passive smoking. Government and Eu measures to tackle particulate pollution (dust, soot diesel fumes etc) have made great strides, but no2 levels (mainly from vehicle exhausts) are not falling as hoped. The government has admitted it will not meet EU targets on NO2 in London, Birmingham, and leeds until 2030. however, improvements have been made -if not as quickly as we’d like. Uk air in general is cleaner than ever according to honorary medical adviser to the british lung foundation pollution is weather dependant and also affected by airflow, so smogs from Europe can cause symptoms in the UK population from time to time. Overall, Uk air pollution is nowhere near as bad as other parts of the world. A world bank report placed London at 2516 on list of the world’s most polluted cities. With sudan, pakistan, Egypt and iraq having several cities placed higher than any british city) But oxford street London, has higher levels of NO2 than anywhere else on earth. Another major contributor to lung malfunction or conditions are caused by over cleaners, furniture polishes, air fresheners and so on, packed with potential harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If are homes are not regularly aired then these compounds can build up to concentrations that are damaging to health. Several studies have linked cleaning products with increased risk of developing asthma and other research has found that cleaning chemicals can react with other VOCS to form cancer-causing substances, including formaldehyde (also known as Methanal, annual production of this substance = 30 million tonnes worldwide, studies show strong association between exposure to formaldehyde and the development of childhood asthma.
Our bodies are able to filter out nasties in the air and protect us to a certain extent, however even a diet packed with foods that help counteract these damaging effects is not quite sufficient in giving us the protecting that we need. But there are plenty of ways to reduce your exposure to polluting chemicals.
-Avoid using conventional cleaning products and opt for bicarbonate of soda, baking soda or vinegar instead.
-Air your house regularly to clean away stale air and harmful chemicals.
-Eat foods rich in antioxidants (superfoods) to counteract damage of free radicals.
-Sweat with workouts and deep breathe with Pranayama yoga.
-Download ‘Clean space’ An app which allows you to see the level of pollution in your specific area and keep a tab on your exposure to pollution so you can change your journey accordingly.
