A brief introduction to why we should quit dairy.

October 6, 2016 By

I am going to be writing about this topic often, among many other animal welfare issues. No doubt you have seen the Earth Children facebook page filled with issues regarding animal welfare, and although the aim is to discuss a wide variety of topics in this space, the majority will revolve around what i consider the most pressing issues our planet is currently facing. So without further ado, here is a brief introduction to why we need to quit dairy ;

The truth about dairy ; Like all mammals, cows only produce milk when they have given birth. Just like human mothers they carry their child for nine months, and then, like us, they will begin to lactate in order to nourish their child. But because of the dairy industry’s interference, extensive genetic manipulation will cause these female cows to produce up to 12 times more milk than she would naturally produce to feed her calf. She will suffer a lifetime of constant confinement, pain and abuse, only to be killed in the end for meat, when her worn out body is no longer able to produce milk, which will be used for burgers, leather hand bags, leather belts, leather shoes and the gelatine in the candy we give our children. Millions of young innocent male baby calves are born into the world each year, but they are of no use to the dairy industry, so they will be killed shortly after birth and used for meat. These calves are forced into the man-made world as their mothers are repeatedly artificially inseminated. with what is referred to as a ‘rape rack’, an object that invades the animal’s body as inseminators push their arm up her rectum pressuring her cervix as they inseminate her with the other arm. To put it simply, female cows are repeatedly raped so that they can produce more babies, and then produce more milk for human consumption. Female cows have their children repeatedly ripped away up to seven times, each time either to be killed shortly after birth and sold for meat. Up to 21 million dairy calves are slaughtered for veal or beef every single year. Can you imagine having a child, only to have that child immediately torn away from you and sent off to be killed, while you are hooked up to a machine to produce milk until the end of your days which will be met with the same fait as your child? To imagine that one may be robbed of the bond with one’s child immediately after 9 months have passed so that we may greedily eat the ingredients she produces for her child, is heartbreaking, and millions of dairy cows experience this every single day. Health ; Although the animal cruelty aspect is what i focus on primarily, another reason why we should consider boycotting dairy is due to health related issues. In spite of the fact that we’ve had the notion that we need dairy for strong bones and calcium drilled into us since childhood, more and more recent studies from the world’s leading nutritionists and institutions such as Harvard, are confirming that everything we ever thought we knew about dairy to be pretty much false. Not only does milk deplete calcium from the bones, it also comes with a whole bunch of nasty and harmful health hazards, (yes, organic included) for example, most brands of milk these days contain herbicides, pesticides, parasites, antibiotics, faeces from the cow, casein (linked to cancer) pus, bacteria, viruses, hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, prolactin, testosterone (which disrupt our own hormones) scores of allergens, fat, cholesterol (bad for fertility) and now new studies have linked it to diabetes, clogging of the arteries, obesity, osteoporosis and even cancer. Studies even confirmed that women who consumed milk regularly were at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer and heart disease! And one Harvard study that followed more than 75,000 women for 12 years found that drinking more milk did nothing to strengthen bones, and instead, increased intake of calcium from milk and dairy products resulted in a greater risk of fractured bones. Visit http://nutritionfacts.org/ for more info. Labels such as “organic” “grass-fed” and “humane” make absolutely no difference and are merely there to make the public feel a little better about their purchases. All female cows suffer identical faits for dairy which subject them to tremendous pain and grieve, and result in the loss of countless children since males birthed into the world are eventually sent off for slaughter. There can be no cheese, ice-cream, butter and so forth without the pain cows endure. So if you think that dairy can be somehow miraculously created without all that, sorry, but it can’t. We tend to refer to ourselves as animal lovers, yet so many of the products we purchase and eat regularly are the entire opposite of everything that an animal lover would ever support. But the happenings of the dairy industry are kept out of our sight and out of our mind deliberately so that we, the customers, can continue purchasing with the happy belief that no harm is being done. But there is currently no system on earth that exploits, objectifies, tortures and murders as many beings as the meat and dairy industry. And any dairy product we buy, consume at a restaurant and so forth is only contributing towards the continuation of this cruel and brutal industry. Every time we order or eat it, we continue to create the demand for it. I know that might be hard to stomach, but it is the absolute truth, and we need to take responsibility for how, as individuals, our choices help create this mass demand. That is why it is so very important that we begin to opt for alternatives instead, because each and every one of us can significantly help to change the state of things by doing so.

Why being a vegetarian is simply not enough ; The dairy industry is the meat industry. What i mean by that, is that if you buy dairy then you still support the slaughter of millions of cows every single year. Vegetarians may believe that by abstaining from eating meat, that they are devoid of contributing to cruelty. But sadly, since we know that buying dairy products contributes towards the murders of billions of babies as well as their mothers who will eventually meet the same fait, vegetarianism simply isn’t enough. In order to truly live a cruelty free life which does not result in the death of millions, we must willing to boycott all animal products, not just meat.

Alternative ; Thankfully, there is a way for us to get all the calcium we need without having to pay for products which fund industries that make so many innocent female cows and their children suffer. Calcium is found in abundance in so many plant-based foods and plant based milks many of which are fortified with calcium. Plant based foods such as broccoli, chia seeds, kale, collard greens, tahini, butternut squash, figs, almonds, chickpeas and oranges are full of calcium and contain none of the health hazards like dairy. And there are now a ton of delicious plant based milks like cashew milk, almond milk, coconut milk, hemp seed milk, oat drink, soy milk, hazelnut milk, macadamia milk, rice milk and even pea milk on the market from brands like Alpro, Rude health, Ripple, Oatley, Provamel, Blue diamond, Pacific Ocean, So delicious, Silk and the Dream which you can find out more about here

If there was a way to make the world a little kinder, would we not try? Well there is a way, and we can begin today, by choosing brands that our good for our bodies, good for our hearts, good for our conscience, great for the environment, and kind to the animals. leave cow’s milk for the baby cows it’s meant for.
